What is 2048?
2048 is a single-player number puzzle game created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014. It's played on a 4×4 grid where numbered tiles slide in one of four directions. 2048 rules
- The board is always 4×4 — 16 cells total.
- Only same-number tiles merge. A 2 will never merge with a 4.
- Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in the chosen direction.
- A tile that was just created by a merge cannot merge again in the same move.
- Your score increases by the value of every new tile you create.
How to win 2048 — strategy & tips
Most players reach 128 or 256 by accident, then get stuck. Winning 2048 consistently isn't luck — it's a handful of habits that top players repeat every game:
- Pick a corner and never leave it. Keep your biggest tile locked in one corner (bottom-right is the classic choice). Most pros only ever press two directions — down and right — and only use left/up when absolutely forced.
- Build a snake. Arrange tiles in descending order along the bottom row, then snake up the next row. This keeps large tiles adjacent so they can chain-merge.
- Never press up (if your anchor is at the bottom). One accidental up-swipe can rip your biggest tile out of the corner and end the run.
- Keep the board empty. Empty cells are oxygen. Merge aggressively when you can, and avoid moves that leave tiny 2s scattered around.
